Summer Fans Blanket

Last year, my husband requested a lightweight blanket for the bed during Southern California's hot summer nights.

After perusing my Pinterest feed for inspiration, I came up with the idea of making individual lace panels inspired by Art Deco fan motifs.

This pattern can use any yarn with a hook 0.5mm larger than recommended for the yarn. I made my blanket with Vanna's Choice yarn and a 6mm hook.

So, here is my perfect summer blanket. The panels are modular. You can mix and match the panels to make any pattern you like and make your blanket any size. Here's the order and color choices I decided on for my blanket:

From left to right: medium blue, skinny gold, wide green, skinny gold, medium blue, wider green, medium blue, skinny gold, wide green, skinny gold, medium blue.

Skinny Panel:   In gold. Make 4.
Ch 9.
Row 1:  Ch 1, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: sc 9. Turn.
Row 2:  Ch 4 (counts as the first tc), tc in the next st, ch, skip 2 sts, (dc 2, ch, tc, ch, dc 2) in the next st, skip 2 sts, tc 2. Turn.
Repeat last row until the length you want. I repeated it 75 times for a blanket to fit a queen size bed.
Row 3:  Ch 1, sc 2, ch 2, sc in the tc, ch 2, sc 2. Turn.
Row 4:  Ch 1, sc 2, 2 sc around the ch-2 space, sc, 2 sc around the ch-2 sp, sc 2. Tie off.
   Tie off. (Fig. 1)

Medium Panel:   In blue. Make 4.
Ch 19.
Row 1:  Ch 1, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: sc 19. Turn.
Row 2:  Ch 4 (counts as the first tc), tc in the next st, ch, skip 3 sts, (2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster) in the next st, ch, skip 3 sts, 2 tc in the next st, ch, (2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster) in the next st, ch, skip 3 sts, tc 2. Turn.
Row 3:  Ch 4 (counts as the first tc), tc in the next st, ch 3, 2 tc in the center tc-cluster of the next fan, ch, (2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster) in the space between the next 2 tc, ch, 2 tc in the center tc-cluster of the next fan, ch 3, tc in the last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 4:  Ch 4 (counts as the first tc), tc in the next st, ch 3, 2 tc in the space between the next 2 tc, ch, (2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster) in the center tc-cluster of the next fan, ch, 2 tc in the space between the next 2 tc, ch 3, tc in the last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 5:  Ch 4 (counts as the first tc), tc in the next st, ch, (2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster) in the space between the next 2 tc, ch, 2 tc in the center tc-cluster of the next fan, ch, (2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster, ch, 2 tc cluster) in the space between the next 2 tc, ch, tc in the last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 6:  Repeat Row 3.
Row 7:  Repeat Row 5.
Repeat Rows 3-7 until the length you want.

   Tie off. (Fig. 4)

To join panels:   In black.
Slip stitch in the starting chain of one panel, ch 4, slip stitch in the end of the starting chain of the next panel, sl st in the top side of the sc of the next row. Turn.
Row 1:  Sc 4 in the chain just made, sl st in the top side of the sc of the next panel. Turn.
Row 2:  Sl st in the first sc just made, ch 4, sl st in the top side of the tc of the first panel, tc 3, sl st in the top side of the tc of the next panel. Turn.
Row 3:  Ch 4, sl st in the top side of the tc of the first panel, tc 3, skip the ch 4 below, sl st in the top side of the tc of the next panel. Turn.
Repeat Row 3 until the two panels are joined along all tc rows.
Ignore the slight difference in height (1 row of sc) between the skinny panels and the other 3 panel types by skipping the first row of sc. The pattern allows some give and flexibility. This will not show in the final product.
Row 4:  Ch 1, sl st in the top of the sc row of the first panel, sc 3, sc in the 4th chain of the turning chain below, sl st in the top of the sc of the next panel. Tie off.

Horizontal Border Panel:   In black.
Sl st in the first st of the top or the bottom of the blanket after joining panels.
Row 1:  Ch 4 (counts as the first tc), starting in the next st, tc in each sc or ch across. Turn.
Repeat Row 1 (tc in each st across) up to 2 more times. I stitched 3 tc rows to make my blanket long enough for a queen size bed.
Row 1:  Ch 4 (counts as the first tc), tc in the next st, skip 1 st, 3 tc in the next st, [skip 2 sts, 3 tc in the next st] repeat across to 3 sts left, skip 1 st, tc in the last 2 sts. Turn.
If you have an uneven number of sts across, you can end the row with a partial diamond:
1 extra st (4 sts left after last 3 tc fan): starting after the last 3-tc fan, skip 2 sts, 2 tc in the 2nd to last st, tc in the last st. Turn.
2 extra sts (5 sts left after last 3 tc fan): starting after the last 3-tc fan, skip 2 sts, 2 tc in the next st, tc in the last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3:  Ch 4 (counts as the first tc), tc in the next st, ch, [tc3tog over the 3-tc fan below, ch 2] repeat across to the last 3-tc fan, tc3tog over the last 3-tc fan, ch, tc in the last 2 sts.
Adjustments for an uneven number of stitches across:
1 extra st: starting after the last tc3tog, ch 2, tc2tog, tc in the last st.
2 extra sts: starting after the last tc3tog, ch 2, tc2tog, tc in the last 2 sts.
Row 4:  Ch 4 (counts as the first tc), tc in the next st, tc in the ch-1 sp, tc in the each tc3tog, and 2 tc around the ch-2 sp across, tc in the last 2 sts.
Repeat Row 4 for the same number of rows as Row 1 was repeated.
   Tie off. (Fig. 5)

I hope you enjoyed this free crochet pattern!
